What a Trooper

Sam has had a hard week, to say the least. The Saturday after Thanksgiving he started feeling bad, which is easy to tell in Sam because he is suddenly not going 100 miles an hour. He was a little more mellow and just not quite himself. By Monday he was running fever and complaining of a sore throat, which a trip to the doctor's office confirmed as strep throat and we went home with a 10 day supply of antibiotics. This was not a big surprise, since Luke has already had two rounds of it in the past couple of months.

We were, however, concerned when, after several days, he still had fever and was very lethargic. So, on Friday we headed back to the doctor! After a quick blood test we discovered that it was not strep after all, but mono. Most people who know Sam are probably not surprised to learn that he would be the one to get "the kissing disease" since he is our child most willing and ready to love on anyone who opens their arms to him. What surprised us was that the doctor said that contrary to popular belief, mono is not a highly contagious disease. She has never had a patient who passed it on to any family members or friends, and said that once his fever broke, Sam would be able to resume normal acticity and not need to be isolated. This was good news, because he was really starting to get cabin fever (and so was I!). He has felt SO much better this weekend, and hasn't run fever since Friday so I think we are over the hump now. He did wake up with a rash covering his whole body this morning, but from what we read on the information the doctor sent home with us, this is normal and due to him having taken an antibiotic while having mono. I'm just waiting on a call form the nurse now to confrim that. But through everything, Sam has kept his huge smile on his face and been the best patient! The fact that he has watched Toy Story (1&2) about 67 times, has had enough pudding and jello to last a lifetime, and gotten lots of extra attention proably have something to do with it, also.
